Mortar joints may occupy less area than the sandstone around them, but they have a decisive job. There is no single lime mix that suits every period property. The right mortar is selected by considering the existing mortar, the sandstone type, joint width, exposure and intended finish. Colour is part of the assessment, but it is not the only consideration. Sand grading, texture and the balance of binder to aggregate all influence how a mortar performs and how naturally it sits within an older elevation.
